U Gem is a proto-typical dwarf nova system that almost periodically exhibits outbursts once in about 120 days. Such a frequent repeatation of outbursts in U Gem makes it an ideal source to study the physical mechanism of dwarf nova activities. We propose to observe U Gem during an upcoming outburst episode with XMM-Newton in order to better understand the spectral and temporal changes associated with dwarf nova outburst in this ptototypical system. We will quantify variations in spectral emission line properties by comparing with the archival XMM-Newton observations of U Gem performed while the system was in the quiescent phase. XMM-Newton is adequately suited to confirm our earlier reported findings of high energy X-ray spectral component and QPOs.
