A detailed analysis of stars with determinations of Fe/H is found to yield a metallicity gradient in the disk of the Galaxy of d(Fe/H)/dR = (-0.05 + or - 0.01)/kpc. It is determined that the entire gradient can be explained by the existence in the disk of two groups of stars with a metallicity jump between them. The metallicity gradient for halo stars is found to be d(Fe/H)dR = (0.04 + or - 0.02)/kpc. This result can also be explained by the existence of two population groups in the halo with different metallicities. It is shown that almost the entire gradient is due to the metallicity jump between the two groups into which the stellar population of the halo is divided. No metallicity gradient is detected in a sample of 80 red giants. In addition, the importance of a number of selection effects in the problem of interpreting the gradient is shown.
