We investigate the physical processes which lead to the formation of massive stars. Using a numerical simulation of the formation of a stellar cluster from the fragmentation of a turbulent molecular cloud we evaluate the relative contributions of isolated fragmentation and competitive accretion. We find little correlation between initial clump mass and final star mass. The gas which eventually contributes to the mass of a massive star is initially widespread throughout the molecular cloud. There is a clear relation between the number of stars in a cluster and the mass of the massive star within it. High-mass stars gain mass as they gain companions, exposing a direct relation between massive stars and the cluster formation process.
