The narrow-band splitting in the Jovian decametric emission was first described by Riihimaa (1968) when observed in the range of 21-23 MHz. In this paper, the properties of the splitting as observed on the dynamic spectra in a wide range of frequencies (20-40) MHz are analyzed. The splitting is observed either at the upper frequency of S-bursts or at the cut off frequency of the broadband continuum emission. The ratio of its bandwidth over the frequency of occurrence is equal to about 0.01. It is shown that it occurs mainly in a small area of the Io-B region in the Io-CML diagram. Over two years of observations the probability of occurrence in this small area is about 50%. It is also observed, but much less often, in Io-C events and in events not controlled by Io. The arc model which predicts this narrow-band splitting (in this model Io-plasma torus and propagation effects are involved) is considered, and it is shown that modifications are required to account for this phenomenon. It is concluded that the origin of the splitting is not yet understood.
