Detecting terrestrial planets around nearby stars will considerably expand the field of planetary sciences. More challenging than the direct detection itself, the analysis of planetary spectra will give precious constraints on the planetary formation processes, the origin and evolution of the atmospheres and the habitability of the planets. This scientific input will however depend on the instrument characteristics and the spectral domain observed (reflected light or thermal emission). In this paper, we investigate the ways to characterize terrestrial exoplanets and their atmosphere, focusing on the science at (very) low resolution.
