In this article, we investigate some noteworthy properties of the first-order moments of the polarization profiles of hydrogen lines in the presence of external electric and magnetic fields. These properties are useful in testing the applicability of the centers-of-gravity method for the estimate of magnetic fields, whenever electric fields are also present. A criticism is also raised about the effective Lande factor in hydrogen lines as previously calculated by different authors. In addition, we achieve a better insight into the problem of the numerical precision of the software package which has been developed for the calculation of the polarization properties of hydrogen lines, a problem already approached in a previous paper.
