Data regarding the relative frequency of occurrence of the chemical elements and their isotopes provide information concerning the conditions prevailing at the time and place of the origin of the elements. Conditions existing at the time of formation of the solar system, on the other hand, can be determined on the basis of information regarding the chemical compounds generated at that time. However, to conduct studies of the original conditions of the solar system on the basis of the latter approach, it must be possible to distinguish primordial compounds and compounds formed as a result of secondary reactions. Attention is given to processes leading to the formation of chemical elements, the qualifications of meteorites as possible sources of primordial materials, interpretation attempts with respect to a number of abundance anomalies, time scales concerning the early history of the solar system, and questions regarding the possible role of a supernova in connection with the processes leading to the formation of the solar system.
