An analysis is presented of the effect of the terminator on the electric field and field-aligned currents in the polar-cap ionosphere. Plasma convection lines are found to stretch jointly to the morning sector and to undergo a discontinuity at the terminator. When Hall and Pedersen conductivities are equal, the convection lines approach the terminator at an angle of 45 deg. If there is a uniform electric field within the polar cap, there should arise an additional system of field-aligned currents, flowing onto the terminator within the polar cap and flowing out of the ionosphere at the daytime boundary of the polar cap. In addition, a potential difference should arise between the equator and the pole.
