We describe a search for high- and intermediate-mass protostars with the goal to systematically study as large as possible a sample of such objects to better understand the high-mass star formation process. Our sample consists of luminous far-infrared sources selected by IRAS color and flux criteria that are not showing free-free emission. Toward these sources we conducted spectral line observations optimized at gaining a maximum of information on the physics and chemistry of the target regions. One objective was to identify sources showing molecular outflows and hot cores indicating that the embedded source is heating its circumstellar environment. In addition, we conducted observations of the 1.2 mm dust continuum emission to identify high column density regions. We find clear evidence for outflows toward most of the sources in our sample, indicating that, as in the case of low-mass protostars, outflow activity is a ubiquitous phenomenon accompanying high-mass star formation.
