We present the first interferometric maps of the prototypical starburst nucleus of the galaxy NGC 253 in the J = 1 to 0 transition of 13CO, CN and HNC. The three molecules show significantly different distributions: CN and HNC are very centrally peaked, with the radical CN being most confined. 13CO especially has many low contrast clumps, but structure is seen in all molecules. HNC and CN show a shift in position angle between the nuclear toroid and the main bar. Clump peaks are identified; for different molecules, they do not coincide in position, indicating that different phases of dense gas are traced. The presence of a structured, lower density `interclump' medium with weak HNC or CN but strong 13 CO emission is suggested.
