Diffuse interstellar bands have defied identification for 65 years. Recent observations have demonstrated that one of the problems is that the chemistry of the diffuse interstellar medium is not understood. We propose to observe H_3^+ and CH_3^+ in some key sources to better understand the chemistry. We will also search for vibration-rotation spectra of long carbon chain molecules that have be identified as possible carriers.
