The differential method of equivalent two-level atoms and a modified linearization method are used to determine the populations of the 3S, 3P, 4S, and 4P levels of the Na I atom at various heights in the solar atmosphere. The observed and calculated profiles of the D1 and D2 lines for four different positions on the solar disk agree well. The calculated profiles of subordinate lines at 330.3 and 1139.9 nm are deeper than the observed ones.
