Long-slit spectrograms of high spatial and medium/high spectral resolution obtained in the visible/near-infrared from the bipolar nebula M 1-92 are presented. The data permit us to identify and to separate three different spectral components: (1) a 'reflected spectrum' representing light emitted from the central star region and scattered off dust in the lobes; (2) a 'direct spectrum' of the central star region obtained at the position of the star after removing the contamination by the reflected spectrum; (3) an 'intinsic spectrum' representing line emission formed in the bipolar lobes themselves. The bulk of available observations indicates that M 1-92 is an evolved object, probably a protoplanetary nebula in the transition phase from an AGB star to a planetary nebula.
