The motion of ionospheric ions into the magnetospheric tail and back toward the earth is analyzed. It is shown that the formation of the plasma sheet from ionospheric particles can occur through their longitudinal acceleration as they intersect the neutral sheet and their subsequent isotropization, leading to their capture in geomagnetic flux tubes. The parameters of the plasma sheet that is formed depend only slightly on the details of the isotropization process (i.e., the specific type of pitch-angle diffusion). Values of the energy, density, and spatial distribution of ionospheric protons during their motion back toward the earth agree satisfactorily with the observed parameters of the magnetospheric plasma sheet.
