The location of the nighttime auroral zone for the epochs 800, 1000, 1200, and 1880 is calculated by the projection of various L-shells along the geomagnetic field lines for these epochs. It is shown that the absence of auroras in Norway during 800-1200 cannot be explained solely by secular variations of the geomagnetic field. One possible explanation is a decrease in the electric field strength in the solar wind with respect to the present epoch. This change may be connected with secular variations of solar activity over the past two-thousand years.
