The size distribution of magnetite grains in a basic igneous intrusion has been investigated by means of electron microscopy. The distribution was found to peak at about 1/4 μm and to extend well into the “submicroscopic” region. Many of the smaller particles observed are expected on theoretical grounds to be single-domain grains, and these undoubtedly make a significant contribution to the stable thermoremanent magnetization.
