The fundamental nature of the interaction between hydromagnetic waves and ions is described, including description of the scattering and acceleration of particles and the self consistent excitation of waves. Models of this wave-particle interaction are useful in studying many phenomena in space and astrophysical plasmas. Here we discuss application to ion shock acceleration in interplanetary space and ion "thermalization" downstream of Earth's bow shock.
