THE X-ray flux from Cen X-3 shows large variations of amplitude with an average period of τ 0 = 4.85 s (ref. 1), the precise value of the instantaneous period varying sinusoidally with a period P = 2.09 d (ref. 2). This variation in the periodicity of the amplitude variations is attributed to the Doppler effect, the source X being considered to be in a circular orbit around a massive body U. The orbital elements of X are The average value of τ is with the possibility of a secular decrease of 1 part in 4,000 over 4 or 5 months.
