Miklós Thege Konkoly, by his achievements in the late nineteenth century, was the major architect of present-day Hungarian astronomy. In this review his life and work are presented on the background of the then-new discipline of astrophysics. His own observatory and instrumentation and his scientific programme are described. We show how Konkoly, who maintained a vast network of international scientific contacts, was able to encourage the development of astrophysics and spectroscopy in his own country. In 1899 Konkoly's observatory became a national institution and the basis for astronomy in Hungary throughout the twentieth century.
