The response of an atmosphere, bounded above by a hot corona, to a statistically stationary, nonresonant excitation is investigated. A model of the solar atmosphere is described, and the spatio-temporal power spectra of the velocity field are calculated for the case when excitation is applied at the base of the atmosphere. It is shown that the distribution of the velocity field energy in relation to frequency and horizontal wavelength is a function of height and depends only on the structure of the atmosphere above the level of the field. Preliminary results for an isothermal atmosphere are outlined, and their relevance to the sun is discussed.
