Solar Magnetic Fields: Structure
Scientific paper
The convective collapse of a magnetic flux tube could be used to explain the fact that solar photospheric magnetograms always show a discrete structure consist of magnetic islands. For the vertical magnetic tube on the solar surface, only those with a magnetic strength higher than about 1000 G are stable, for those with lower than this critical value would either strengthen if the gas in the tube flows downwards, or weaken if it flows upward, and collapses eventually.
