The equation of Burbidge et al. (1974) used to calculate chance coincidences between pairs of objects at different distances is observationally investigated and found to be valid. The result supports their inference that the presently known cases of small angular separation can neither prove nor disprove the cosmological distances of QSOs with statistical confidence.
