It is shown that the lifetimes of molecules against photodissociation in circumstellar envelopes of T Tauri stars are very short. The production rates of CO through gas-phase reactions are not sufficient to keep the equilibrium column densities at an observable level. The absence of mole- cular features reported for this class of stars is qualitatively understood
