A systematic review is presented of observational data on circular polarization in white dwarfs which may indicate the presence of magnetic fields. Topics reviewed include the number and average dimensions of observed white dwarfs, observations of the quadratic Zeeman effect, Zeeman polarization in emission lines, and circular polarization in the continuum. Basic parameters are tabulated for four magnetic white dwarfs, the possible relationship is examined between the circular polarization seen in these stars and the presence of magnetic fields, and hypotheses for the formation of magnetic fields in white dwarfs are discussed. It is concluded that magnetic white dwarfs probably did not proceed through the hypothetical evolutionary sequence from DA to DB to DC, but are relatively young, recently formed objects. It is suggested that their large magnetic fields should be considered as relict fields preserved from their parent stars.
