Scientific paper

The INTEGRAL satellite is discovering a large number of new hard X-ray sources in the Galactic plane. In most cases, the few arcminute INTEGRAL positions do not allow for identification of these IGR sources at other wavelengths, leaving their nature unclear. Chandra can make a major contribution to studies of IGR sources by localizing the sources to allow for the identification of multi-wavelength counterparts and by constraining their soft X-ray spectra. Many of the IGR sources that have been identified are High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) with interesting properties. We propose for relatively short Chandra observations of 20 unidentified IGR sources in the Galactic plane to search for HMXBs or other unusual Galactic sources.
