The European Space Agency's plan for space research called Cosmic Vision is outlined and the role of the Darwin mission and its precursor experiment GENIE within it is explained. Darwin is the ultimate mission within the current planning in the field of study of exo-planets. It has as its goal the detection and study of Earth-like planets orbiting other stars, especially as what concerns these bodies possibility of hosting life as we know it. The baseline technology of Darwin is nulling interferometry in space, and GENIE (Ground based European Nulling Interferometry Experiment) represent the enabling of this technology. Darwin and its associated scientific case are described. The status of Darwin is presented, and the form of the collaboration with NASA~@~Ys Terrestrial Planet Finder mission is described.
