A technique to suppress oscillations of a structure under exciting forces is described. Equipments for observations of astronomy and astrometry are more or less oscillated by the ground vibration. It can be considered that low frequency oscillations from the ground are not damped effectively during their transmission to the system. Those oscillations, particularly those in a low frequency region, should be eliminated for precise measurements. To suppress low frequency oscillations of a structure by the ground vibration, the authors considered a dynamic damper which effectively reduces oscillations in a particular frequency range. As an example, the authors studied a tuned liquid damper (TLD), a kind of dynamic damper which is made of a cylindrical vessel with liquid having the same natural oscillation period as the structure. The experiments showed that there is a possibility to damp oscillations by the TLD. The authors will make more experiments to explore ways to effectively operate the TLD, and to optimize the design of the vessel's shape.
