Night-Sky Brightness: Variations

Scientific paper

The brightness of night skies at Mitaka campus of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan in the summer and winter seasons is examined based on the photoelectric measurements in the years 1986 through 1993. The distribution of the observed sky brightness along the zenith distance is examined and compared with a simple city-light-scattering model through a plane-parallel atmosphere. As for its secular changes, the night sky at Mitaka became brighter by about 0.5 mag/arcsec2 from 17.74 mag/arcsec2 in 1986 to 17.27 mag/arcsec2 in 1992 in the direction to the zenith. However, there is an interesting fact that the brightening trend almost vanished, if temporarily, at around 1992, and even a slight improcement toward darker night sky was observed in 1993.
