The Martian eastern hemisphere from Hellas Planitia in the south to Utopia Planitia, the site of the Viking 2 lander, in the north, is introduced for the general scientific reader. Recent work by Malin Space Science Systems and the California Institute of Technology on the mapping of the region is briefly described, as well as research from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and its industrial partner, Lockheed Martin Astronautics. Illustrations are largely drawn from images obtained by the Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Orbiter Camera, and released on the Worldwide Web. Some historical background is given in relation to the early ground-based telescopic observations of Mars' albedo features in the eastern hemisphere familiar to 19th and 20th century astronomers, as well as to images from the Hubble Space Telescope.
