Three years of radiance data of the channel 3000 of the PMR (Pressure Modulator Radiometer), carried by the Nimbus 6 satellite, have been combined into monthly mean maps. It is shown that these data are representative for the temperature in the height region 75-80 km. A full description of the horizontal radiance/temperature structure is given throughout the year with emphasis on longitudinal and hemispheric differences. The radiance patterns indicate the existence of several meridional cells as proposed by different authors. In comparing the upper mesospheric data with stratospheric data, the strong coupling between the stratosphere, and the upper mesosphere, especially in the Northern Hemisphere, is pointed out which exists during most of the year-except during the summer when the winds from the east prohibit the upward propagation of the planetary waves.
