We performed a radio-frequency survey towards 17 Bok globules and around eight Herbig Ae/Be stars in the 23694.495-MHz NH3 (J, K=1, 1) and the 22344.033-MHz C2S (JN=21-10) transition lines. 10 Bok globules do not contain IRAS point sources and are assumed not to be star-forming at this time (inactive globules). Seven contain IRAS point sources and are supposedly associated with star-forming regions (active globules). The Herbig Ae/Be stars are pre-main-sequence objects still interacting with their parental cloud. The aim of the work is to establish a relationship between the chemical characteristics and the physical evolutionary stages of a small molecular cloud. Along this line, it has been recently proposed by Suzuki et al. that the ratio N[NH3]/N[C2S] may represent early or late stages of cloud evolution. The results of our investigation are discussed in the light of the above hypothesis. It appears that one of the supposed inactive globules, L1253, is, in fact, in an intermediate stage, which shows that the core contraction has already begun.
