An analysis is presented of emission line profiles of NGC 3783, a Seyfert 1 galaxy. Data were obtained with the Image Photon Counting System on the intermediate dispersion spectrograph at Cassegrain focus of a 3.9 m telescope, and an echelle spectrograph, with resolutions from 0.03 to 0.12 nm. Blueshifts were found for high excitation forbidden lines with respect to the systemic velocity of the galaxy or to lower excitation lines. The following conclusions are made: (1) there seems to be a relationship between the FWHI of the main component within a line and the ionization potential of the corresponding ion. (2) For all the forbidden lines, there is a relationship between the FWHI of any component and its emission shift, with broad components and high ionization species being more blueshifted. (3) The Balmer lines show components corresponding to the forbidden line regions, but their main contribution is from a very redshifted component. Results are best interpreted in the framework of a central massive object surrounded by an accretion disk, for which an inclination of 15 degrees and a mean radius of 1000 RS are derived.
