Scientific paper

An investigation is presented of the effect of longitudinal currents on the electron density in the auroral E-region; this effect is manifested in variations of the frequency of penetration of sporadic E layers under the action of longitudinal currents. The effect of longitudinal currents is considered in relation to three phenomena: steady-state magnetospheric convection, the azimuthal component of the interplanetary magnetic field, and the Harang discontinuity.
