Recent discoveries such as the far-infrared/submillimeter background -- most probably from high redshift, star-forming galaxies and spatially resolved, zodiacal-like dust emission around other stars -- highlight the need for exploring how the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST) could be used at wavelengths longer than 5 /mu m. The NGST will have a unique combination of sensitivity and angular resolution which will be unmatched in the mid-infrared (MIR). These MIR capabilities will not only enable the study of the objects producing the far-infrared background but also projects such as determining the albedos and diameters of Kuiper Belt objects with radii as small as 25 km and the temperatures and densities of gas accreting onto the youngest protostars.
