The Legacy Program of the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) is planned to consist of major research programs proposed by the scientific community to make the most effective use of this powerful facility, with the first call for proposals to be released in only about 1 1/2 years. Legacy Programs are expected to produce significant new scientific results, which will be both rapidly communicated to the scientific community and to be very broadly useful. As a consequence of the goals for the Legacy Program, it is important that potential proposers and teams have the opportunity to learn about both the program and the capabilities of SIRTF. This special session will provide interested scientists with the information necessary to propose Legacy Programs to SIRTF. Capabilities, performance, and operational modes of SIRTF will be summarized and the support activities of the SIRTF Science Center (SSC) will be outlined. The goals and criteria of the Legacy Program will be presented and clarified, so that future proposers will have a clear understanding of this opportunity. Finally, there will be a description of the schedule for proposing to observe with SIRTF. About one hour of the 90-minute session will be devoted to describing the Legacy Program and the support services of the SSC. The remaining time will be devoted to Q&A with the audience.
