The asteroid 85 Io was observed during 7 nights in February and March 1980 at the European Southern Observatory. The rotation period was determined to 0d.28644 ± 0d.00002 m.e. and the maximum observed lightcurve amplitude was 0m.16. From the March observations the colours of 85 Io was determined to B-V = 0m.67 and U-B = 0m.30, quite typical for an asteroid of the C-type.
