Rate constants are computed for the charge exchange and fine structure excitation reactions in collisions of O with D(+). Interatomic potential curves and interactions determined for O-H(+) collisions are employed in a quantal close-coupling calculation of the O-D(+) collision involving O(3P) and O(4S)(+) atoms and taking into account fine structure coupling terms. Rates of the charge exchange reaction from the ground state of oxygen with D(+) are found to be greater than those for the ground state reaction with H(+) at low temperatures (less than 100 K) and less than that of the H(+) reaction at temperatures greater than 150 K, while reaction rates for the 3P1 and 3PO states of O with D(+) are always observed to be less than those for reaction with H(+). Fine structure excitation rates are observed to increase steadily with temperature and to be smaller for D(+) ions than for protons. The rate coefficients obtained are expected to be useful in the development of numerical models of diffuse interstellar clouds in the determination of the ionizing flux of cosmic rays.
