A 2.2 micron map covering 50 square arc min of the Omega Nebula is presented in order to reliably estimate the total near infrared flux from M17. The observations were performed with an InSb photometer mounted on the 1.2 m telescope of the German-Spanish Calar Alto Observatory in Spain between 1977 and 1980. Ten discrete sources were found within the large area of extended 2.2 micron emission, five of which are identifiable with known stars. The total 2.2 micron flux density from M17 is about 50 Jy. The major part of the diffuse emission can be accounted for in terms of free-free continuum radiation.
