To evaluate the number of original nitrogen components in the lunar regolith and to estimate how secondary regolith processes affect the nitrogen isotopic composition, a detailed isotopic study of argon and nitrogen has been conducted on regolith samples brought to the Earth by the Luna-16 and Luna-24 automatic stations. Stepped combustion runs are shown to demonstrate a regular, systematic pattern: nitrogen, 36Ar and 40Ar release profiles display a high degree of similarity; with increasing temperature, a consistent heavy-light-heavy nitrogen isotopic composition pattern is revealed, with light nitrogen being dominant in the 650-850 degC range. Most of the delta15N variation coincides with a nearly constant 40Ar/36Ar ratio. The data obtained are not consistent with the model of secular solar wind nitrogen variations and suggest the existence of two originally different nitrogen components (an isotopically light nonsolar component and heavy solar one) being mixed during regolith reworking. Data for fractions of mature regolith samples brought by the Luna-16 automatic station imply that during impact, regolith reworking nitrogen becomes isotopically heavier, and that nitrogen retention is higher than argon. A new hypothesis proposed to explain delta15N variations during stepped heating runs implies that variations in nitrogen isotopic composition reflect different nitrogen occurrence.
