The appropriate determination of pseudo-continuum spectra is one of the critical steps when trying to retrieve scientifically relevant information from spectroscopic data. Typically one derives the pseudo-continua by fitting a low-order polynomial or splines to the data, excluding regions with conspicuous spectroscopic features. The problem with this approach is that, no matter how carefully one chooses the data to be fitted, those fits are always passing through the spectral data points, whereas in principle the goal is to obtain a representation of a pseudo-continuum that must be placed on top of the spectrum. The use of boundary fits constitutes an excellent approach for this particular problem.
