The properties and possible origins of three types of galactic spiral structure are reviewed. The grand design galaxies M81, M100 and M51 apparently contain wave modes, although M51 also contains a material arm of tidal origin in the outer part. Various optical tracers for the spiral pattern speeds in these galaxies are suggested. Multiple arm galaxies may contain either several interfering wave modes or single modes in their inner regions and transient wave packets or star formation arms in their outer regions. Flocculent galaxies may contain either numerous wave modes or wave packets throughout their disks or they may get most of their structure from wave-independent star formation. The relative frequencies and sizes of galaxies with these three types of spirals are given.
