Electron Heating in the Solar Wind
We discuss the possible role of lower hybrid waves in collisionless electron-ion equilibration, as a means of resolving the discrepancy between the higher charge states in minor ions measured in situ in the fast solar wind and those inferred remotely from spectroscopy of coronal hole regions, which are lower. Such equilibration occurs at a rate much faster than that due to Coulomb collisions alone, and occurs because of the anisotropy in the ion distribution function perpendicular to the magnetic field direction that arises in a density gradient with characteristic length as small as a few times the ion gyroradius.
