Work on a protoype Virtual Solar Observatory (VSO) is now under way. The prototype will offer access to data from online solar archives at Stanford, NSO, Montana State, and the SDAC. We discuss some of the features of the VSO for users, as well as the basic design and some of the technical aspects, including the use of XML schemas and SOAP to allow users a single access method for disparate data services.
