Starting from ideal magnetohydrodynamics, we analyse the linear stability of a semi-circular electric current sheet fixed on the photosphere. The main conclusion is that when the magnetic field in the direction of the current is less than a certain critical value, the sheet will be unstable, and the wave number of the first unstable mode in the direction of the current will be approximately the reciprocal of the diameter of the semi circle.
