The effect of a density inhomogeneity on the gravitational collapse of a spheroid is discussed. It is shown that a small initial density inhomogeneity which decreases outwards will lead to a considerable pressure gradient which will tend to resist gravitation at the late stage of the collapse. This effect depends strongly on the thermodynamic process. An oblate inhomogeneous spheroid will oscillate for the polytropic process with index 5/3. For a prolate inhomogeneous spheroid with a large initial ellipticity, however, the instability proposed by Lin, Mestal and Shu (1965) may even be strengthened.
