The possibility of detecting various HCN bands in the upper atmospheres of cool carbon stars is evaluated on the basis of compiled laboratory data and theoretical modeling. The techniques used to calculate line positions and intensities are described in detail, and numerical results are presented graphically for the sample case of UU Aur. Synthetic spectra are generated and shown to be in good agreement with the observed spectra of carbon stars with similar effective temperatures; however, it is demonstrated that only three combination bands of HCN can be visible in UU Aur or warmer stars: (1) a very weak band in a crowded field near 1.5 microns, (2) a band obscured by the earth atmosphere at 2.5 microns, and (3) a more promising band at 3.6 microns. An unknown band near 1.03 microns and lines at 790-800 nm are specifically shown not to belong to HCN as previously supposed.
