By treating the Greenwich photoheliographic results statistically, it is proved that the dependence of the number of appearances of short-lived sunspot groups on the distance from the central meridian displays, apart from a distinct maximum at the eastern limb of the disk, also a pronounced maximum in the western solar hemisphere; this maximum is located close to the western limb of the solar disk for one-day spot groups and, with increasing lifetime of the groups, its position moves towards the central meridian. As a result of this, the overall E - W asymmetry of the appearance of short-lived sunspot groups is either zero or slightly in favour of the western hemisphere. Analogous properties are also displayed by the E - W asymmetry of the disappearance of short-lived groups.
