A violent dynamical phenomenon newly observed in a complex active region (1980) is described in detail. Fairly periodic reversals (each 45 min) of the umbral magnetic torsion at the photosphere, which may be explained in the light of simple mathematical modelling, are found to be strongly correlated to overstable velocity oscillations at the same location. This perturbation of the usual Evershed flow is thought to be the manifestation at the solar surface of MHD modes excited at the top of the convective zone in magnetic tubes, and trapped in chromospheric arches.
