An important change has been observed since 1981 in the 18 cm OH maser emission of the Mira star R Leo. The authors report here their detailed observations, completed with the available data which can help in the understanding of this evolution. The nature of the phenomenon is discussed, and it is shown that its cause is probably a modification of the pump mechanism. Because the OH maser of the Mira star U Ori is already known to be singular, a comparison is being made between the two stars. The meaning of the event in Mira stars evolution is studied.
