Evidence concerning the relationship between the redshifts of extragalactic objects and their distances derived from investigations of associations between quasars and galaxies with similar and different redshifts is reviewed. A list of quasars found to lie within 10 arcmin of bright galaxies with very different redshifts or their fainter companions is presented, and the number of quasars found near bright galaxies by Arp (1977) and others is compared with that expected by chance to provide statistical evidence of the association of quasars with galaxies. Observations of pairs of quasars at different redshifts and of associations between quasars and galaxies at the same redshift are presented, and studies of the relative distributions of quasars and faint galaxies leading to the conclusion that quasars are not present in rich clusters while they may be associated with small groups of galaxies are discussed. It is concluded that the evidence obtained thus far suggests that some quasars have redshifts that are totally cosmological in origin, while others have redshifts with noncosmological mechanisms.
